Eileen Guenther has been invited to play a recital on the new organ in the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center on Oct 30. She is the first woman to be invited to play the organ and this is only the second full  recital on the instrument.
Kimberly Marshall presented the keynote lecture for the symposium on medieval organs held at Amsterdam’s Orgelpark June 6-8 to celebrate the installation of the “Van Straten Organ.” This instrument, named for Dutch organ advisor Rudi van Straten, attempts to recreate the Peter Gerritsz organ from 1479, when it was built in Utrecht’s Nicolaïkerk.  Medieval scholars from around the world came to discuss issues of restoration, performance practice and cultural history.

 Pictured is Kimberly performing on the new organ, with winding expert Christoph Deslignes pumping the bellows.  In late June Kimberly was invited as a guest artist for the 30th annual meeting of the Korean Association of Organists in Seoul.  She presented a concert on the Klais organ at Seoul Presbyterian Church, where a former doctoral student, Jooyean Cha, is organist.  She also presented two lectures (one on the history of the German Praeludium and the other on the development of ornamentation from Buxheim through Bach) for which she was honored to have the translations provided by another former doctoral student, So-Yi Ahn.  Three students from Korean universities performed for her masterclass, which included works by J. S. Bach and Bruhns.

Kimberly was the artistic director for the latest GOArt organ academy, held September 5-8 in Gothenburg, Sweden.  The themes for this year’s academy was organ music of the 20th and 21st centuries, improvisation and the history of sound recording.  She presented a concert of music by Cage, Ligeti, Sweelinck, Foccroulle, Schlick and Pärt on the large Yokota meantone organ in Örgryte New Church.  She also taught classes on contemporary repertoire and presented early sound recordings to demonstrate how they can inform us about performance traditions.  Other concerts were presented by Frédéric Blanc, Martin Herchenröder, Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler, and Henrico Stewen.  Kimberly introduced the GOArt recording database which contains 14,000 entries and is working to link it to other online resources.

Faythe Freese  served as faculty for the Birmingham POE from July 14-19, 2013 and performed “The Freese Collection”, Movement 3: La croix de foi (The Cross of Faith) by Pamela Decker, commissioned by Faythe Freese.

Dr. Charles Kennedy gave the following July 17 review on Facebook of the POE faculty performance:

“Herb Buffington did extraordinarily well on his improvisation on two submitted themes, from radically different traditions: the hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus” and the hymn “Standing on the Promises”, very cleverly juxtaposing them in all kinds of interesting ways (it worked!). Also, I couldn’t help but think of my friend Pamela Decker from back in our Ann Arbor days, as Faythe Freese performed the third movement from Decker’s work “The Freese Collection” (“La Croix de foi”) in a knock-out performance, scaring the heck out of those of us sitting in the gallery when the Major Trumpet came on the very last chord.”S

Faythe Freese performed the European premiere of “The Freese Collection” on May 25, 2013 at Magdeburg Cathedral, Magdeburg, Germany.  Other works performed: “Variationen und Fuge uber ein Originalthema fur Orgel”, Op. 73 by Max Reger and “Orgelsonate uber ein Thema” bu Heinz Wunderlich.

Josh Coble, candidate for the doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance at the University of Alabama, is an official competitor for the 2013-2014 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance.

Christopher Henley, BM in Organ Performance at The University of Alabama, Freshman, participated in the POE-A at Eastman School of Music on July 14-19, 2013.  His teachers were Nathan Laube and Timothy Olsen.

Tamara Cash was busy over the summer composing organ introits which will be  submitted for publication next month.  These introits are 8-20 measures long and are appropriate for inclusion in any service which desires a thematic introduction to the sermon/lecture, or they may be inserted at any appropriate moment.  The Introits are either Unison, SAB or SATB and are designed for a reader-choir from the semi-pro to pro level, preferably with a minimum of 8 personnel.

 She also had 4 songs and scenes from a recent musical premiered in New York on August 19th at the 47th Street Theatre in Manhattan.

In July, Laura Carrasco was the organ professor for the Summer Academy at the Sacred Music Institute of Morelia, Mexico (ISMUSAM).   She worked with 28 students that came from all over the country.

In August, Laura Carrasco was invited as soloist in the opening concert of the fall season of the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra (Mexico) with maestro Juan Trigos conducting.   She took part in the premiere performance of Music for a Revered Image for organ and orchestra by Mexican composer Carlos Vidaurri.

Gail Archer played eleven concerts abroad this summer between July 17 and August 17, 2013, the Orgelsommer, Tubingen, Germany, Orgelsommer, Hauptkirche St.  Michaelis, Hamburg, Germany,  Amici dell’Organo, Alessandria and Grondona, Italy,  the Valesia Summer Organ Festival, Scopello, Italy, and five concerts in Russia sponsored by the Philharmonic Society in Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk and Perm, Russia.

 Sarah Johnson, a sophomore music major and organist at Vassar College, was selected as an E. Power Biggs Fellow, 2013 by the Organ Historical Society and attended the national OHS Convention in Vermont, June 24-29, 2013.
