Sarah Johnson is a graduate of Vassar College where she studied organ performance with Gail Archer. A native of Garland, Maine, she has played services and concerts for churches in the Bangor area as well as in Poughkeepsie, NY. For her last two years at Vassar she served as Music Intern at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poughkeepsie. Over the summers of 2015 and 2016 she was the Resident Organ Intern on Squirrel Island, off the coast of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, playing for their Chapel services and directing their choir. For the 2015 to 2016 school year, Sarah directed the Vassar Camerata Choir, a group dedicated to the performance of early music.
Sarah began her organ lessons with Kevin Birch, organist and music director at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Bangor where she was recently featured as a recitalist for the 23rd Summer Organ Concert Series. She has attended the Summer Organ Institute at Westminster Choir College in New Jersey twice and was named an E. Power Biggs Fellow of the Organ Historical Society in 2013. Sarah is a member of both the Organ Historical Society and the American Guild of Organists.
Since beginning college she has performed in New York City at Central Synagogue, in Boston at Old West, and placed second in the 2015 Eastern NY region of the AGO’s Regional Competition for Young Organists. Sarah is currently studying for a Master of Sacred Music in Organ at Boston University under the direction of Peter Sykes and serves as Organ Scholar at Holy Name Parish in West Roxbury.
