Marty Wheeler Burnett

Marty Wheeler Burnett is Canon Precentor at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska, where she coordinates the musical and liturgical life of the cathedral under the leadership of the dean. She leads a growing music program with singers and instrumentalists of all ages, as well as a vibrant concert series. Burnett heads the Cantate Choral Academy, which offers choral music education for children in grades 1-8 and Kindermusik classes for younger children. She directs the Cathedral Choir, the Requiem Choir, and the Cathedral Schola Cantorum, and provides oversight for the Handbell Ensemble. As cathedral organist, Burnett plays for liturgies and supervises the maintenance of the cathedral’s instruments.

Previously, Burnett served as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Fine Arts at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, where she developed the choral music program and taught courses in organ, piano, music history, and music theory. Burnett conducted the college choirs, oversaw the art, music, and theatre departments, and served as Director of the CSM Concert Series. Her publications, presentations, and research focus on liturgical music, particularly hymns and service music by women, and composition. Under her leadership, the College of Saint Mary Chorus, CSM Singers, and Musica Sacra (a community chorus based at CSM) performed twice at Carnegie Hall and toured Ireland and Italy, singing for Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Choir members participated in a service-learning trip to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and performed throughout Nebraska. Regional choir tours included performances in Minneapolis/St. Paul in 2011, Chicago in 2012, Kansas City in 2013, and Denver in 2015.

Burnett is the recipient of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association’s 2011 Outstanding Choral Director Award as well as several teaching awards. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in organ performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and a Doctor of Ministry degree from The University of the South. Burnett served as Dean of the Omaha Chapter of the American Guild of Organists from 2007-2009 and Regional Coordinator for the Association of Anglican Musicians. She has worked as a parish musician in Texas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, and is a published composer of sacred choral works.
